Abstract:
Tourism has its place in Slovakia, it is one of the dynamically developing industries. It brings many benefits to the country. Tourism not only in Slovakia but also in many other countries was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-2020. However, starting in 2021, there is a visible boom in this industry. The main goal of the contribution is to evaluate the development of selected indicators of the tourism industry in Slovakia in the period 2017-2023. This study utilizes quantitative methods to analyze tourism intensity in Slovakia from 2017 to 2023, focusing on three primary tourism indicators: the Defert Index, Tourism Intensity Rate, and Schneider Index. Data were sourced from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, and four key tourism indicators were analyzed: the number of accommodation establishments, the number of overnight stays by visitors, accommodation revenues, and average accommodation prices. Additionally, regression analysis is used to examine the influence of external factors on tourism, particularly focusing on: The relationship between fuel prices (gasoline and diesel) and the number of domestic visitors and the correlation between the average monthly salary and the number of overnight stays by domestic tourists. With increasing tourism intensity and regional potential, especially in underdeveloped areas, Slovakia’s tourism sector has shown resilience and a slow recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. This underscores the need for ongoing infrastructure investment, product diversification, and targeted marketing to support balanced and sustainable regional development.
